Salt Lake City, Utah, November 10, 2009—Savage Services Corporation of Salt Lake City, Utah (Savage) announces that it has entered into definitive agreements to acquire the assets, terminals and services business of Safe Handling, Inc. of Auburn, Maine (Safe Handling). August 2008 Safe Handling Earns USEPA SmartWay® Highest Rating
The USEPA’s SmartWay® Transport Partnership is an innovative collaboration between the U.S. EPA and the freight industry to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution. Safe Handling is a partner in this program and in August, our fleet was again given the USEPA’s highest rating for fuel efficiency, 1.25. Click here for the SmartWay website.

June 2008 Safe Handling Opens Ethanol Terminal in Pennsylvania
Safe Handling opened the only ethanol rail-to-truck transloading terminal in Mount Pleasant, PA.  Served by Canadian National, CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads, the terminal is within 100 miles of dozens of petroleum terminals in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. February 2008 - Safe Handling Earns ISO14001 & Responsible Care
Safe Handling President, Ford Reiche, says, “We’re pleased to be recognized for our management systems focused on minimizing our impact on the environment. This has always been a priority for us, but to be one of the first Maine-owned businesses to receive ISO14001 is especially rewarding. This was a highly ambitious goal, and I’m very proud of our team.”

January 2008 – Safe Handling Promotes CFL’s
Safe Handling’s president, Ford Reiche kicked off 2008 by giving all 100 employees a gift of 12 Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFL’s), packaged in a re-usable fabric grocery bag.  Efficiency Maine rebated $1.50 for each package. The bulbs will save each employee $750 over the life of the bulbs and this initiative will reduce power plant CO2 emissions by 240 tons, equivalent to taking 40 cars off the road for a year.

December 2007 – Safe Handling Opens Maine’s First Ethanol Terminal
On December 13, 2007 Safe Handling announced the opening of Maine’s first ethanol terminal.  Governor John E. Baldacci joined other industry and government officials in the opening celebration

September 2007 – USEPA Rates Safe Handling Fuel Efficiency “Outstanding”

August 2007 - Safe Handling Joins USEPA Smart Way Grow & Go Program
Safe Handling becomes Charter Member of US EPA’s Smart Way Transport Grow & Go Program, encouraging trucking companies across the country to use biofuels to reduce emissions and reduce the county’s reliance on foreign oil.

Safe Handling hires Andy Meyer as VP Business Development – Green Initiatives, focusing on finding new sustainable businesses like biofuel manufacturing, and helping to improve the sustainability of Safe Handling’s core business.
